What We Did
Built in 1977, the VA Loma Linda Hospital campus had experienced a significant number of one-off improvement and expansion projects, and as anticipated, those singular projects left behind a labyrinth of abandoned utilities, undocumented subterranean structures – and a myriad of questions. To supplement the preliminary plan drafted from the available maps and as-built plans, her team performed detailed Aerial and Field Topographic, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and multiple Physical Site Surveys to reveal if the existing conditions aligned with what was indicated in the 40+ years of incongruent record drawings.
Bree worked in close collaboration with the Veteran’s Affairs Loma Linda campus facilities staff to prepare an As-Built Utility Plan for use in anticipation of their developing Healthcare Campus Master plan. Through detailed review of reference maps provided by the VA’s facilities staff as well as additional as-built and utility information discovered during due diligence, Bree directed the design team to begin stitching the pieces together in CAD to create a visual image of what the available record drawings indicated the existing subterranean infrastructure looked like.
Combining a strategic blend of research and surveying methodologies, Bree developed an innovative strategy which successfully located, identified, and labeled all existing subterranean utility infrastructure and above-ground appurtenances in a custom CAD file, which split the campus as-builts into quadrants and was further refined by utility type and color. Once the as-built plan had been completed, her team then physically labeled above-ground appurtenances with custom tags featuring nomenclature developed in collaboration with the VA facilities staff for ease of future maintenance. Not only does the final As-Built Campus Plan provide invaluable insight into what lies beneath the site for future expansion, it also hangs on the wall of the VA Facilities staff offices and serves as the master reference for all campus utilities maintenance activities.
"Bree's client and project management skills were essential to the success of our recently completed master plan for the US Dept of Veterans Affairs. As a consultant, her ability to look at the big picture, manage important details and work with other disciplines helped the team exceed the client's expectations.
I look forward to collaborating with her and her team on future projects."
